Niraam Adornments
Jewellery Care Guide
Love Your Jewellery. Let It Last.
At Niraam Adornments, we believe jewellery is more than something you wear — it becomes part of your style, your memories and the moments you celebrate.
Many of our pieces are crafted using materials such as brass, silver-look/silver-replica finishes, plated surfaces and hand-painted detailing. These materials are chosen for their beauty, character and intricate craftsmanship.
Unlike anti-tarnish or solid precious-metal jewellery, these pieces naturally require a little extra care.
With the right care and storage, you can keep your Niraam adornments looking beautiful for a long time.
✨ The Golden Rule: Last On, First Off
The simplest way to protect your jewellery is:
Put your jewellery on last and take it off first.
Apply your skincare, perfume, hairspray, makeup and other beauty products first. Allow them to dry completely before wearing your jewellery.
When you are ready to remove your jewellery, take it off before cleansing your face, bathing, exercising or going to bed.
Keep Your Jewellery Away From Water
Water and moisture are among the biggest enemies of fashion jewellery.
Please remove your jewellery before:
- Showering or bathing
- Swimming
- Going to the beach
- Washing your hands
- Doing dishes or household chores
- Exercising or sweating heavily
- Sleeping
- Visiting a sauna or steam room
Repeated exposure to moisture can accelerate tarnishing, oxidation, discolouration and deterioration of finishes.
Especially for hand-painted jewellery
Hand-painted details require additional care. Prolonged exposure to water, humidity or rubbing can gradually affect painted surfaces and intricate detailing.
Please do not soak hand-painted jewellery in water.
Keep Perfume & Beauty Products Away From Your Jewellery
Perfume, deodorant, body oils, moisturisers, sunscreen, makeup, hairspray and other cosmetic products can contain ingredients that may react with jewellery finishes.
These products can gradually affect:
- Plating
- Polish
- Colour
- Hand-painted details
- Decorative finishes
Our simple routine:
Skincare → Makeup → Perfume → Let everything dry → Jewellery
This small habit can make a big difference.
Sweat & Skin Oils Can Affect Jewellery
Every person's skin chemistry is different.
Sweat, natural skin oils and body chemistry can cause some jewellery to tarnish or change colour faster than other pieces.
This does not necessarily mean that the jewellery is defective.
If you have been wearing your jewellery for several hours, especially in warm or humid weather, gently wipe it with a soft, dry cloth before storing it.
How to Clean Your Jewellery
For regular cleaning:
Use a clean, soft and completely dry microfiber or cotton jewellery cloth.
Gently wipe the surface after wearing.
Do not scrub aggressively.
Do not use abrasive materials.
Do not use rough towels or tissues that may create friction against delicate finishes.
Please avoid:
- Jewellery cleaning liquids
- Silver dips
- Metal polishing compounds
- Toothpaste
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Lemon
- Alcohol
- Bleach
- Household cleaning products
- Abrasive sponges
- Hard brushes
These methods may remove or damage plating, polish, colouring, lacquer or hand-painted details.
Important:
For hand-painted pieces, do not attempt aggressive polishing to remove tarnish.
The surface may contain decorative paint or finishing that can be removed along with the tarnish.
Brass Jewellery
Brass naturally changes over time.
Exposure to air, moisture, sweat, humidity and skin oils can cause brass to gradually develop a deeper or darker appearance.
This natural process is called oxidation or tarnishing.
Some people love the character that develops on brass over time; others prefer to maintain its original appearance.
To slow down tarnishing:
- Keep brass jewellery dry.
- Wipe it gently after wearing.
- Avoid perfume and cosmetics coming into direct contact with it.
- Store it separately.
- Keep it away from humidity.
- Avoid wearing it while swimming or bathing.
A change in colour over time is a natural characteristic of brass and should not automatically be considered a manufacturing defect.
Silver-Look / Silver-Replica Jewellery
Silver-coloured or silver-replica jewellery can also naturally darken or change appearance with exposure to air, moisture, sweat and chemicals.
The exact care required depends on the material and finish of the individual piece.
Always follow the care instructions provided for your particular product.
If the piece has a decorative coating, plating or painted finish, avoid aggressive polishing.
Never use silver-dip cleaning solutions unless the product specifically states that the material and finish are suitable for them.
Hand-Painted Jewellery
Our hand-painted pieces deserve a little extra love.
Because the detailing is created as part of the decorative finish, please:
- Keep the piece completely dry.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to water.
- Avoid perfume and cosmetics.
- Do not scrub or polish painted areas.
- Avoid rubbing the painted surface against other jewellery.
- Store each piece separately.
- Handle it gently when putting it on and taking it off.
Slight variations in hand-painted detailing may occur from one piece to another.
These subtle variations are part of the charm of handcrafted artistry and make each piece beautifully individual.
Store Each Piece Separately
Good storage is just as important as careful wearing.
Whenever possible:
One piece → One pouch/compartment.
Keeping jewellery pieces separately helps prevent:
- Scratches
- Tangling
- Surface rubbing
- Damage to delicate details
- Contact between different metals
We recommend storing your jewellery in a clean, dry and preferably airtight jewellery pouch or box.
Avoid leaving jewellery exposed on bathroom counters, dressing tables or other humid areas.
Keep Jewellery Away From Humidity
Humidity can accelerate tarnishing and oxidation, particularly in brass and other fashion-jewellery materials.
For best results:
- Store jewellery in a dry place.
- Keep it away from bathrooms.
- Close the storage box/pouch after use.
- Consider using a small silica-gel moisture absorber inside the storage area.
- Do not store damp jewellery.
Extra tip
If your jewellery came with a protective pouch or storage box, use it.
Your jewellery doesn't need to be displayed all the time to be beautiful.
Sometimes, the best place for a special piece is safely tucked away until the next occasion.
Avoid Sleeping in Your Jewellery
We recommend removing your jewellery before sleeping.
During sleep, jewellery can experience:
- Friction against skin and bedding
- Pulling or snagging
- Pressure on delicate components
- Unnecessary exposure to sweat and body oils
Removing it before bed helps preserve its finish and structure.
Be Careful With Delicate Components
Many fashion jewellery pieces contain delicate elements such as:
- Chains
- Hooks
- Clasps
- Charms
- Stones
- Beads
- Pearls
- Decorative elements
- Hand-painted components
Do not pull, twist or bend jewellery unnecessarily.
When removing earrings, hold the appropriate part of the earring rather than pulling on the decorative portion.
For necklaces and chains, open the clasp gently instead of pulling the chain apart.
Jewellery & Clothing
Be mindful when wearing jewellery with delicate fabrics such as silk, chiffon, lace or fine knits.
Hooks, edges and decorative components can sometimes catch on fabric.
Put jewellery on after dressing whenever possible, and remove it before changing clothes.
Natural Tarnishing Is Not a Defect
Please remember that fashion jewellery made using materials such as brass and silver-look finishes can naturally change over time.
Tarnishing, oxidation and gradual changes in colour can occur because of:
- Air exposure
- Humidity
- Sweat
- Skin chemistry
- Perfume
- Cosmetics
- Moisture
- Storage conditions
- Frequency of wear
The rate at which this happens can differ from person to person.
Your jewellery's journey may look different from someone else's — and that's perfectly natural.
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Think of your jewellery the way you think of your favourite clothes.
You wouldn't leave a beautiful silk saree in the rain.
You wouldn't spray perfume directly onto a delicate fabric.
And you wouldn't store your favourite outfit in a damp place.
Your jewellery deserves the same little moments of care.
Our Niraam ritual:
Wear → Enjoy → Wipe → Store → Repeat.
Five simple steps to help your favourite pieces stay beautiful for longer.
Before You Store Your Jewellery
Before putting your jewellery away:
✓ Make sure it is completely dry. ✓ Gently wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. ✓ Close clasps where possible. ✓ Store pieces separately. ✓ Keep them away from humidity. ✓ Keep the storage area clean and dry.
And then let your jewellery rest until the next time you wear it.
